Characterization
Castalia is the Academy’s library and the only discipline among the foundational seven that is hosted natively rather than federated. Named in tribute to the school in Hesse’s Glass Bead Game, it is the discipline of study itself — the curation of materials, the authoring of syllabuses, the discussion of texts. A Fellow who takes up Castalia commits to study as a practice in its own right: to the slow accumulation of a personal library, to the gathering of others into the orbit of what one has found, and to the willingness to be taught by what one has gathered. Castalia is the discipline by which the other disciplines come to know themselves. Its hosted surface — the Library at /castalia — opens in Phase 3; until then the discipline is honour-system, and a Fellow’s syllabuses live wherever they are kept.
Lineage
Named after the contemplative pedagogical order in Hermann Hesse’s The Glass Bead Game (1943), whose own vision drew on the medieval monastic libraries and on the Renaissance studia humanitatis. The Academy’s Castalia is hosted within the platform rather than federated; its quests in Phase 2 will have concrete fulfilment paths once the Library opens.
